  • Do you offer discounts on classes and/or camps?

Yes! Use code MULTIWEEK for campers signed up for more than one week of camp. Use code SIBLING any time for siblings taking classes or attending camp. Both discounts include 10% off.

  • Can you recommend a sewing machine?

Yes!  I'm so glad you asked!  You do not have to spend a lot of money to get a great machine. We like Singer Heavy Duty machines, Singer Simple, Singer Tradition, Janome 2212, Brother CS5505, Eversewn Sparrow, and Husquvarna Viking Jade 20. We also love Pfaff and Bernina though they are higher priced. The Bernette b05 Academy is a great mid-range choice.

Check out these recommendations tested by one of our students https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-sewing-machine/

I also sometimes have machines used in class for sale at a huge discount, ask me about them!

  • Do you offer private lessons?

Occasionally. At this point, we are running 26 classes a week in addition to birthday parties and workshops on the weekends, so our time for private lessons is limited. If you are a beginner and want to learn how to sew, we suggest you check out our classes! If you need help with a specific project or technique, please reach out to us for a private lesson. Examples from past private lessons include learning how to sew boning into a corset; learning how to make buttonholes; how to use your new serger; how to make your own basic pattern. If you are unable to attend our classes, please keep an eye out for workshops that may help you in your sewing journey.

  • Can you prorate my class fees if I need to miss more than one class?

Every student receives one makeup class per session. We can not prorate or accommodate more than one missed class per session.

  • Can you make me cushions/alter my bridesmaid’s dress/hem my pants/fix my zipper?

We do not take on sewing jobs.  There are lots of fantastic local upholsterers and tailors who would love to take on your work (and will probably charge less than me).  Try Ultimate Upholstery or Mar-Ant, both in South Orange! Better yet, take one of our classes and learn to do all of these things yourself!

  • Why can't my 4/5/6/7 year old take your machine sewing classes or camp?

I'm sure your child is lovely and I would enjoy having them as a student!  However, as enthusiastic about sewing as they may be, kids younger than 8 haven't developed the fine motor skills to cut fabric in a straight line, thread a regular size needle, or control the sewing machines (some of the bigger kids struggle with this as well!).  Some can't reach the floor pedal or aren't tall enough to reach the iron on the ironing board (and do you really want your 4/5 year old using an iron?).  This makes it frustrating for them to work independently and complete projects.  They will be a lot happier and confident if they wait until they are 8.

  • I’d like to suggest a business proposal for you in which you have your students sew items for me, for free, during their class time, using your materials and resources. It could be great practice for your students.

    No, thank you.

  • Can you put me in touch with one of your students for a sewing project?

    Nope.
